Description:

NECA-700 is a new National Electrical Installation Standard (NEIS) that is titled “Standard for Installing Overcurrent Protection to Achieve Selective Coordination.” This presentation provides a high level review of the one of the newest and most popular NEIS to date. Since selective coordination recently became requirements in Articles, 517, 700, and 701, there have been many unnecessary misconceptions and fears about compliance.

The goal of selective coordination is to limit an electrical outage only to that portion of the electrical system that experiences an overcurrent (overload, ground fault or short circuit) event.  What that means practically is that the overcurrent protective device, circuit breaker or fuse, closest to the overcurrent is the only device that operates to clear the event.  This new industry standard describes the application procedures for installing low-voltage overcurrent protection to achieve selective coordination. NECA 700 covers the installation of low-voltage overcurrent protective devices, circuit breakers and fuses, rated 600 volts and less, for selective coordination in electrical distribution systems for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

This presentation shows a practical approach to achieving selective coordination of overcurrent devices as required by the NEC for emergency power systems and simplifies what many believe to be very complex. This course provides attendees with a concise review of multiple methods that can be used for designs that achieve selectivity in all levels of the system to minimize blackouts in critical operations facilities.
