As a part of the Gesher Galicia SIG program at the conference, we will examine the rich historical background of the Jewish communities that once lived in the region and countering existing stereotypes. The Galician communities will be seen to have been dynamic and engaged in debates about tradition and modernity. We will consider a range of archival records, useful for both beginners and those with advanced experience in family history research, including vital records, maps, and other surprising resources less often used by genealogists. Much of this information will be available through Gesher Galicia and other easily accessible sources. The talk will be illustrated using many maps and examples of records, with directions on how to tap to new sources of information. (AH)
