The national and local prescription opioid crisis will be defined with current data. Information about the response at the state and local levels will be discussed. Recent legislation and dental community initiatives will be explained. The various causes of orofacial pain and the appropriate treatment strategies for each diagnosis will be discussed. The use of opioids, non-opioid medications, and non pharmacologic strategies will be compared.
