Presenter: Victor J. Dzau, MD - President of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences Format: MP4 Video file of Slides and Audio
The landscape of health and medicine is changing rapidly. Health care spending is expected to accelerate, driven in part by a rapidly aging population and the rise of noncommunicable diseases. Furthermore, countries of all development levels struggle to achieve the “iron triangle” of health care: access, cost, and quality. It is clear that health care needs reform and ultimately transformation. Fortunately, many exciting and innovative developments are emerging to address these challenges. One promising approach is the rise of integrative medicine, which “puts the patient at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health” (The Bravewell Collaborative 2011). Dr. Dzau will discuss the current state of health and medicine, strategic global health care initiatives, and the role of integrative medicine in achieving a healthier future.
