Format: MP3 Audio Download or Compact Disc

Presenter: Dr. Stephen Quarles

Previous studies have shown that wind-driven rain entry into buildings can result in extensive interior damage.? Recent research at the IBHS Research Center evaluated the effectiveness of selected secondary roof sealing strategies that are installed to protect against water entry in the event that the roof covering is blown off during high-wind events. These include use of tapes and membranes, special installations of felt underlayments, synthetic underlayment and spray-foam insulation. During this presentation, the performance of these sealing strategies will be presented. This presentation is 30% commercial and 70% residential and is presented at an intermediate level.

1. Describe the available secondary sealing strategies to protect against entry of wind driven rain and identify which sealing strategies can be used when the roof covering is not being replaced.
2. Discuss the contribution of selected venting scenarios? to the entry of wind driven rain into an attic space.
3. Identify variables that can affect the adhesion of tape and membrane to a sheathing substrate.
4. Determine the importance of installation to the performance of the sealing strategies.
5. Evaluate secondary sealing strategies used in this study.
