During the revision cycle for the 2013 edition of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, new provisions were added with the intent to reduce nuisance alarms from smoke alarms and detectors installed close to stationary cooking appliances by requiring them to be listed for resistance to nuisance sources. In addition, a provision was added that all household smoke alarms and detectors are to be listed to be resistant to all common nuisance sources by 2019. To develop a listing test for smoke alarms and detectors, data needed to be collected on common nuisance sources; this session will discuss the results of a project the Fire Protection Research Foundation undertook with Hughes Associates to do so.
