A modern data center can exceed 300,000 ft2 and consist entirely of server racks where power loss is not acceptable and cooling needs are increasing exponentially. These changes create more challenging fire hazards, including higher cable density and novel cooling configurations. This session will define the challenges of applying water mist systems to the hazards associated with grouped cables and storage of commodities in data center processing equipment rooms. Water mist system protection schemes developed are from fire testing in a collaborative project between a commercial insurance company, a data center owner, and a water mist system equipment manufacturer.
