The International Association of Fire Fighters proposes facilitating a panel discussion on the use of flame retardants and the effects they present on the health and wellbeing of the firefighting community. Our proposed panel would consist of individuals from the firefighting community, fire protection specialists and occupational health scientists. Discussion will begin with a brief overview of current information on how flame retardants affect the health of firefighters and the increased rate of occupational cancer that we are seeing in the fire service. This panel will also review the safety benefit versus risk of using current flame retardants and the possible alternatives to meet current regulations. We will also include discussion on the current flame testing standards that are being debated and are in development. Panel discussion will be overseen by the moderator with a question and answer session to follow.
