Theatrical productions can be a source of wonder where the impossible happens on a daily basis; but they also present a unique challenge to AHJs who must be concerned with the safety of both the audience and the people who make a living on and behind the stage. The unique nature of theatrical productions, and the experiences of past tragedies, have led to the creation of fire safety systems that differ from those seen in more traditional industries. Members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) will provide discuss the operation, components, and requirements of the theater fire safety system as well as key issues that warrant special attention. We will also examine how to coordinate the fire safety system with special effects such as theatrical smoke and fog.
