The past decade saw an increase in awareness and renewed emphasis on safeguarding facilities and processes engaged in solids or particulate handling and use. NFPA combustible dust standards date back to the 1920s; however, incidents during the past 10 years have brought the core practices into sharp focus through increased inspections by OSHA and more activity within NFPA committees. This presentation reviews the new standard on fundamentals of combustible dust, NFPA 652, and describes how it works within the current structure of the industry or commodity-specific NFPA standards.
