For years, plastic pipe has been evaluated for fire and smoke performance in a variety of ways, especially when evaluated for use in ceiling cavity plenums. These different methods are known to yield varying results. A common method of testing plastic pipe is the Steiner Tunnel (UL723 / ASTM E84) for flame spread and smoke developed characteristics. Recently, UL received a proposal and released a new UL Standard - UL 2846, "Fire Test of Plastic Water Distribution Plumbing Pipe for Flame and Smoke Characteristics". This session will focus on the discussions facing NFPA 90A, ASTM and other committees on the topic, and will highlight the new UL Standard.
