Every year hundreds of millions of passengers board planes in the United States with little to no doubt that they will arrive safely at their destination. They rely on air traffic controllers to guide the way and the controllers rely on the fire protection system to keep them safe and allow them to do their jobs. Airport Traffic Control Towers possess many challenges when it comes to life safety and code compliance. This presentation will take you through many of these challenges such as delayed egress, limited egress, structure height and mission continuity and how the FAA has overcome these challenges to create are safe environment to controllers. We will also provide an overview of special systems and code interpretations to design safe towers.
