Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and one of the leading causes of fire deaths; the range is the equipment most often involved. NFPA and the Fire Protection Research Foundation are engaged in several activities to reduce these losses. NFPA's Pub Ed program had developed considerable educational material on the subject. Ranges can be designed to resist ignition, but doing so requires clearly defined tests of success. This interdisciplinary presentation will provide statistical information about the range fire problem, the progress in developing proposed standard tests of cooking oil ignition resistance, and outreach tools to help consumers protect themselves from cooking fires today.
