The treatment of burn injuries involves high-cost services. Automatic fire sprinklers can substantially decrease or prevent fire injuries, not to mention deaths, property damage, and the release of environmental toxins; yet design, installation, and maintenance of such sprinklers requires financial resources. This session will address the economic balance of treating patients burned in a residential fire vs. the cost of implementing residential automatic fire sprinklers. The results of this cost analysis illustrate the high cost of burn injuries occurring at home and why automatic fire sprinklers should be mandatory for all new residential homes.
