A flameless venting device installed over an existing vent can quench a vented dust explosion but also obstruct the flow, effectively reducing the original vent area. This causes the overpressure in the enclosure to increase (in some cases to values above the design strength); therefore, the performance of these devices should be evaluated to ensure proper usage. This session will address the methodology used in FM Approvals Standard 7730. Full-scale performance test results will be interpreted using different vent-sizing correlations (e.g., NFPA 68, FM Global, VDI 3673) to determine an efficiency that describes the effectiveness of an FM Approved device.
