Over the years, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations have been affected by new federal laws, and audits have now become an undeniable reality. Today, no health care organization can afford to overlook HIPAA compliancy. This lecture will address new compliance requirements as defined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 and the HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule, which went into effect on Sept. 23, 2013. Among items to be discussed are the new breach notification requirements and changes in the obligations for business associates. Sample practice scenarios in this presentation will illustrate where systems go wrong and patient confidentiality can be compromised.
