This course will succinctly and completely cover all the essential information needed for a general practitioner without formal anesthesia training or permits to safely administer oral sedation (anxiolysis) to adult dental patients for routine general dentistry. Participants will use a wireless audience participation system to interact with the presenter and respond to questions and surveys. Topics to be covered include: Why and when to use oral sedation; definitions and terminology; anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, patient evaluation using: medical history, physical exam, pre-sedation evaluation; emergency preparedness; techniques; basic protocols for adults; guidelines; regulations; principles of sedation; enteral vs. parenteral; how to tirate; treatment of complications; monitoring; recovery and discharge; and, record keeping.
