Keynote Presentation: Is Menopause a Disease? The Estrogen and Androgen Conundrum

It is well known that women have less heart disease than men until after the menopause where the risk of heart disease is comparable between women and men. It is known that the type of heart disease that post-menopause women get is different from that of men and often more serious in its presentation. It is also known that post-menopausal women who take statin drugs to reduce their risk to heart disease have nearly a 50% increase incidence in type 2 diabetes, whereas men of the same age taking statins do not have a similar increase in diabetes. It is also known that women have autoimmune disease nearly five times more frequently than men. This presentation will review new research information that provides an explanation of these observations from which a clinical approach utilizing a Functional Medicine Approach to these issues will be provided.
