Presenter: Paul Schenk, PhD

This workshop will introduce clinicians to a new induction method first developed several years ago that the presenter has used regularly with clients since then. The technique is an extension/application of ideomotor signaling, Bennett Braun’s BASK model of memory, and Freud’s work with free association. With the induction, the client responds to a semi-structured, decision tree series of open-ended verbal prompts. The client’s responses are inherently trance inducing, and quickly function to form the setting for a story/hypnotic experience “from another time and place” in which the client becomes the main character. Clients routinely report that the first person experience is emotionally rich. A variety of therapeutic applications will be discussed with transcripts and video tapes to demonstrate such improvements as symptom reduction/resolution, ego strengthening, and enhanced intuitive capabilities.

Attendees will have ample time to practice the technique in small groups with feedback. The presenter will briefly review Cheek’s “7 keys” diagnostic process of using ideomotor signaling, Braun’s BASK memory model, and Schenk’s 4-D family systems model to provide a framework for helping to determine when to utilize the fill-in-the-blank induction. The technique itself can be easily integrated for practitioners already comfortable with hypnotic phenomena.

During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Discuss at least 10 symptoms/issues that present on Axis I, II, III and IV (DSM typology) for which this technique can be applicable;
-> Describe how to use the “fill-in-the-blank” induction with clients; and
-> Combine ideomotor signaling with the fill-in-the-blank induction to construct a treatment plan that is both more targeted and sequentially implemented.
