Update on Psychotherapy in Plain English: A Brief Guide For Non Mental Health Practitioners to The Latest Techniques - How to Explain Psychotherapy Referrals Quickly and Effectively to Patients
Broadly defined, psychotherapy itself comes in 2 major categories: cognitive behavioral and insight-oriented. There are now many subtypes within each group, often with different names and acronyms to represent them such as ACT, FST, DBT and ego state therapy to name a few. To the uninitiated, they can sound like a virtual “alphabet soup” of treatment options. Presenters will explain a variety of innovative, evidence-based methods psychotherapists now use to help medical patients cope more effectively. Guidelines for efficient referral will be presented. Participants will be invited to present cases to demonstrate how to use these guidelines to help decide when to refer.
During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Differentiate between the 2 basic modalities of psychotherapy: cognitive behavior therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy;
-> Evaluate the new specialty techniques now available;
-> Articulate how best to identify cases in which referral to behavioral health can help improve medical outcomes; and
-> Utilize techniques to expedite communication with patients about referral to behavioral health.
