Recent Findings for Understanding and Enhancing the Effects of Hypnotic Analgesia and Increasing Hypnosis Funding and Clinical Outcome Research
David Patterson, PhD, ABPH and Mark Jensen, PhD
This scientific session will focus on two equal parts providing a discussion of some recent findings on the neurophysiological effects of hypnotic analgesia and use of hypnosis for enhancing the efficacy of cognitive therapy, coupled with a discussion of ideas for increasing hypnosis outcome research in ASCH. Dr. Jensen will begin the session by presenting some new hypnotic analgesia findings and discussing their clinical implications. This will be followed by a discussion, facilitated by Dr. Pattersion, on relevant issues in hypnotic analgesia research. The barriers to pursuing research with clinical treatment as a primary activity will be discussed, as well as ethical constraints and outcome measures. National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for hypnosis research will be emphasized, as well strategies to enhance funding in this area, including stimulating interest in hypnosis in early career psychologist and physicians as a primary means to promote development in the field.
