Beyond the Basics: Creative Approaches in the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders
Sharon Spiegel, PhD, ABPP; and Assen Alladin, PhD
Practitioners who utilize hypnosis know how effectively it can enhance the efficacy of the traditional modalities for treating anxiety disorders--e.g. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) protocols such as exposure therapy, response prevention, and relaxation training.
Indeed, controlled trials, meta-analyses, and reviews demonstrate that when CBT strategies are combined with hypnotherapy the effect size increases. In this advanced workshop we will present and discuss cases that have challenged us to add creative and innovative modifications to combined CBT/hypnotherapeutic protocols, creating unique, integrative treatment plans that fit the individual needs of each client. Each of the three presenters will discuss particular case studies and how they went through the process of adding a novel approach. The presenters will share the ways in which they have added new elements to their work, including music, information technology, mindfulness, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), countering Negative Self-Hypnosis (NSH), Thought Stopping, and demonstration of the power of the mind over the body. Participants will also learn how to make clients active participants in their own treatment and engage patients in individualizing their own treatments. Attendees will be encouraged to identify patients in their caseload who might benefit from a more innovative, integrative approach so that the group can discuss ways in which to formulate creative modifications.
