Speaker:
Dr. John Coke, DDS, UAB School of Dentistry
About the speaker:
Dental degree, Loyola University School of Dentistry; professor and program director, University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Dentistry.
Description:
As the US population ages, the entire dental office will be involved in evaluating and treating patients with an ever-increasing complex medical history. This generation, often portrayed as the Baby Boomers, can present with a long laundry list of medications: prescription, OTC and herbal. These patients are also constantly bombarded by pharmaceutical direct marketing on the "latest and greatest" medicine available for all their constant aches and pains. The dental office team should be updated on the current medications and their implications in dentistry. Dr. Coke will present, in a very practical, clear-cut and entertaining manner the basics in pharmacology needed for the busy private practice dental team that will be treating the Baby Boomers for years to come.
Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Update your office medical history
Establish a baseline medical risk assessment (MRA) on each patient
Discover how to write a medical consult that is actually returned in a timely manner
Gain knowledge of updates on the medical management of: diabetes, hypertension/coronary artery disease, asthma, liver disease, kidney disease, head and neck radiation therapy
Identify medical histories that are potential "train wrecks"
