Speaker:
Dr. Robert Marx, DDS, University of Miami School of Medicine
About the speaker:
Dental degree, Northwestern University; professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and division chief, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Description:
Today, dental practitioners have many materials available to them that are marketed as bone grafts. These include cell products, recombinant proteins, allogeneic bone, xenogeneic bone and synthetics among others. Each may be useful in limited circumstances or in a broader number of indications. Since bone regenerates at different rates and degrees only by osteogenesis, osteoconduction, osteoinduction or a combination of these three; it is prudent to understand the contribution of each of the commonly used graft materials to these three processes. The clinician can then best choose the graft material that will most likely accomplish the desired bone regeneration in a particular defect.
Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Understand the differences between osteogenesis, osteoconduction and osteoinduction
Understand the utility and limitations of commonly used graft materials
Learn the best application of commonly used graft materials
