ETHICAL DECISION MAKING IN NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND PRACTICE AMONG ETHNIC MINORITY INDIVIDUALS

U.S. demographic and sociopolitical shifts have resulted in a rapidly growing need for neuropsychological research and services for ethnic minority populations. However, clinical neuropsychology as a field, has not kept pace with the needs of ethnic minority populations. How does the field of clinical neuropsychology begin to truly address the growing needs of increasingly diverse patient populations in an ethical, culturally competent manner? This intermediate workshop will address this critical question by integrating relevant ethical and professional standards with leading edge research in multicultural neuropsychology. The objectives of this course are to discuss: 1) the application of ethical and professional guidelines as they relate to multicultural neuropsychology; 2) current health disparities germane to neuropsychological research and practice; 3) important ethical considerations for research and practice with ethnic minority populations; and ) models of decision-making to resolve ethical challenges with ethnically diverse individuals. The course objectives will be accomplished through the presentation of empirical evidence, clinical case examples, and discussion of specific ethical challenges in research and practice (e.g., language and literacy, as well as proper use of tests and norms). After completion of this course, attendees will be able to: 1) Apply ethical and professional guidelines to neuropsychological research and practice among ethnic minorities; and 2) Recognize ethical considerations and conduct ethical decision making in research and neuropsychological assessment of ethnic minority populations.
