Presentation 1: Toward Enhancing Safety in Hypnosis Workshops: An Ongoing Odyssey.

Enhancing safety in hypnosis workshops is an issue of central importance to both the progress and promulgation of hypnosis as a facilitator of treatment. It long has been known that while hypnosis is a generally safe modality, a small but predictable number of adverse effects are encountered even when hypnosis scales are administered in research settings, and adverse effects are not infrequent during training and practice sessions in hypnosis workshops. In order to move toward implementing meaningful changes with substantial potential to reduce the number and/or severity of such unfortunate incidents, it is necessary to establish an awareness of the nature of these events and a create a sensitivity to their aftermaths. This presentation will attempt to establish this awareness by presenting and discussing a number of incidents which demonstrate how hypnosis training can "go wrong."

- Explain two basic elements of Goldratt's Theory of Constraints;
- Apply Nathanson's Compass of Shame to appreciating organizational responses to
whistleblowers' observations; and
- Define "Coasting in the countertransference."

Presentation 2: Professional Hypnosis Workshops: Potential Liabilities

Does a Professional Hypnosis Society take on liability when it gives educational workshops about training in the delivery of health care services? This paper argues that the answer to this question is yes. First, the issue of following the written standards of training and clinical practice will be addressed in light of the ASCH Standards of Training and Clinical Practice. Second, the issue of following empirically validated teaching methods and evaluation of learning objectives will be presented and discussed. Finally, the issue of teaching empirically validated diagnostic and treatment methods will be presented and discussed. Recommendations will then be made about how to standardize teaching methods and evaluation of learning objectives.

workshops;
- Identify and describe the ASCH Standards of Training and Clinical Practice;
- Identify various approaches to standardizing training in clinical hypnosis; and
