Hypnosis and the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Ashley Goodman, DDS, AMHD; Gabor Filo, DDS, AMHD
Audio Sample:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is being medically/dentally diagnosed more frequently on the estimated approximately 25% of the patient population. The treatment of choice prescribed in most cases is a variety of positive pressure appliances (CPAP, APAP, BPAP, etc). Three quarters of these patients (depending on severity of their condition) find that they can, or will not tolerate these appliances. We will review the basics of OSA/CSA and explore the use of hypnosis in helping these patients adapt to the recommended treatment and also the alternatives medically/dentally available.
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to…
- Understand the benefits and liabilities of hypnosis treating OSA;
- Have a foundation in the understanding of OSA; and
- Know the different ways OSA can be treated.
