NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENT
Ralph Benedict, PhD, ABPP-CN
Professor, Neurology and Psychiatry, SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, Buffalo General Hospital Buffalo, NY, USA
This workshop will cover imaging, psychometric and neuropsychiatric aspects of multiple sclerosis (MS) in order to improve neuropsychological evaluation for clinicians and foster new research initiatives. The following topics will be covered: (a) neuroanatomic underpinnings of cognitive impairment as measured with brain MRI, (b) cost-effective assessment procedures, (c) comorbid neuropsychiatric disorders, and (d) treatment of MS associated cognitive impairment. The workshop will begin with a review of brain imaging in MS and educate the audience about the more robust correlates of cognitive dysfunction. Next, candidate measures for neuropsychological assessment will be compared in terms of their psychometrics and clinical utility. The speaker will also review recent research on optimal outcomes for clinical trials and the clinical meaningfulness of cognitive tests. There will be considerable coverage of neuropsychiatric and personality changes that are commonly observed in cognitively-impaired MS patients. The remainder of the workshop will focus on medical and behavioral treatments and the neuropsychological management of MS patients. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to (1) evaluate MS patients in a valid, and cost-effective manner, and apply psychometric findings derived from MS samples to clinical practice, (2) understand the neuroanatomic substrates that explain the variable neuropsychological presentation of MS patients, and (3) guide patient adaptation to neuropsychological impairment based on the empirical literature covering the treatment of MS-associated cognitive disorder.
