A Holistic Approach to Managing the Grasslands of the World: Creating Environmental, Economic, and Social Resiliency
Andrea Malmberg will show how Holistic Management can restore grasslands, mitigate climate change, provide food security and sovereignty, create wealth, and improve well-being for individuals and communities. She will share stories that show how Holistic Management has created positive environmental, economic, and social impacts in different environments and cultures -- and how the Savory Institute is promoting properly managed livestock as the key to large-scale restoration of grasslands around the world.
Andrea Malmberg, Director of Savory Institute's Research and Knowledge Management Initiative
Andrea Malmberg was raised on the land with livestock and real food in the western United States. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Natural Resources from Washington State University. After completing her studies in Zimbabwe and Argentina in 2007, Andrea became an Accredited Associate Consultant and Educator in Holistic Management.
Over the last twenty years and in many different capacities, Andrea has facilitated citizens in gathering data and interpreting and understanding biological and sociological phenomena so that they can make sound ecological, economic, and quality of life decisions. Most notably, Andrea was appointed to the United State’s Interagency Forest Ecosystem Assessment Team in 1993, co-developed a widely used ecosystem process monitoring protocol, and is frequently cited for her work on the importance of place in creating environmental ethics and landscape meanings.
With her husband Tony, Andrea has profitably run several land-based, value-added enterprises including raising and marketing Beyond Organic Exclusively Grassfed Beef and running an agritourism guest business. Guided by their holistic goal, they relocated their family’s cattle ranch from Lander, Wyoming to Union County Oregon in 2008 in order to access better markets for their beef and consulting work, heal more land, encourage the adoption of holistic management, and influence public policy by sharing their results.
Andrea is an active volunteer with Oregon Rural Action, is a participant in Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition and the Slow Food movement, is on the advisory board for Friends of Family Farmers, and is on the governing committee of Oregon Voice. Andrea’s enterprises as well as her hobbies of raising pastured poultry and pork, making goat cheese, and canning vegetables are ways for her to show that agriculture can thrive both ecologically and economically while enhancing one’s quality of life. Her employment choices and volunteer work demonstrate her conviction that if people are empowered with knowledge they can heal the land, effectively influence policy, and create lives full of wellbeing.
