Judith McGeary, Esq: Food Safety Laws
Judith McGeary will address the major developments in food safety regulation in the last year, including HR 2749, S 510 and FDA's produce standards. The presentation will cover what would actually be required under these laws and regulations and what are the remaining open issues. Judith will also cover the realities of the politics behind these laws, the issues facing farmers and consumers in lobbying Congress and the agencies, and how individuals and organizations can maximize their impact.
Judith McGeary, Esq is an attorney, activist, and farmer. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Stanford University and a J.D. with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin. Following a clerkship with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, she practiced as an attorney doing a combination of administrative law, litigation, and appeals. After seeing first-hand how government regulations benefit industrial agriculture at the expense of family farms, she founded FARFA to provide a voice for independent agriculture. She and her husband have a pasture-based farm with cows, sheep, and heritage-breed chickens and turkeys, and are active with Holistic Management International--Texas, the Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, and the Weston A. Price Foundation.
