This presentation will offer valuable tips to understanding and preserving family photos (1870?s- 1920?s), with an emphasis on what can be learned from the clothing worn by the subjects of the photograph. Attendees will learn about how to put together a photographic family tree, how to use clues from clothing and hair styles to date images, and how to organize and store archival materials properly. The case study for this presentation is a Jewish family with roots in nineteenth century Russian Empire. Family members migrated to New York, Chicago, and Cleveland, leaving behind traces of their European and early twentieth century American past.
