Confused by your ancestors' documents, which sometimes say Austria and sometimes Poland? Chances are that those ancestors originated in Galicia -?a region that was part of the Austrian Empire for almost 150 years and is now part of southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. This talk, geared to those new to Galician research, will cover where and what was Galicia, unique marriage and naming traditions that so often lead researchers astray, how to identify and locate your towns and learn their past and current names, understanding record-keeping practices in Galicia, sources for Galician research, resources available from Gesher Galicia and more. We'll mention some culinary and language clues as well! Once you know the basics, please join your fellow Galitzianers at the many sessions this week that will teach you more about researching your roots in Galicia, a province of the former Austrian Empire.
