The Jewish community of Gombin (Gabin) existed for over 400 years. In the 1920's a group of emigre Gombiners joined together to help new emigrants and support relatives at home. Now the Gombin Society works to preserve the legacy of the town's Jewish history and culture and to educate new generations. The Society organizes visits to Gabin where we have met with Poles who also want to rediscover their entwined past. Acting under the aegis of the Gombin Society we have created memorials, films, websites, books, and theatre. Recent visits have deepened our relationships with Polish friends, and introduced a new generation of Gombiners to their families' community using saved artifacts and memories. We look at what has been achieved so far, and what we hope to achieve in the future. There will also be an opportunity to share ideas and experiences with others interested in similar projects.
