Jewish life events are recorded in multiple calendars. Governments used a secular calendar, while religious institutions recorded Hebrew dates. Secular dates must be converted to Hebrew dates to determine life's significant dates such as birth, bar/bat mitzvah, wedding and yahrtzeit (death anniversary) as well as Jewish holidays. Hebrew dates must be converted to arrive at the secular date. All these dates are significant for Jewish genealogy and help explain discrepancies found in records. Therefore, a basic understanding of the luach (Hebrew Calendar) and its interplay with the secular calendar is mandatory for Jewish genealogy research. This session will explain the basic workings of calendars needed for research, Julian, Gregorian and Hebrew, and demonstrate how to convert dates using a date conversion tool.
