Sephardic surnames are often hereditary for centuries and many go back to the 12th century. But to effectively use these names in archival and document research it is necessary to understand how they evolved and which are verifiable legitimate variants. This presentation will illustrate how history and local languages affected Jewish surnames and ways to document true name variants from imaginative interpretations. We will also see when and why Sephardi and Ashkenazi naming patters diverged.
