Sound Reduction Membranes: Sorting the Myth and Mystery Out of Sound Reduction Numbers
Brian Pistulka
Format: Video of Slides with Synchronized Audio
ANSI 118.13 sets the standard for sound insulation membranes. Prior to the introduction of the standard, a wide variety of testing conditions were used to rate and position sound dampening products. Design professionals and contactors need to have the tools necessary to cut through the marketing hype and understand the specifications for sound reduction in order to be able to choose the right materials for the application.
At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
Discuss the standards and methods for testing of sound reduction membranes
Assess the differences between impact and airborne sound dampening and the testing of the layering system
Properly compare products available in the marketplace, their characteristics and benefits during application
Identify tools available to help choose the right membrane for the application including dual use membranes such as those that provide sound dampening and crack isolation
