Recognizing that chronic illness may be complex and multifactorial and not reducible to a single mechanistic effector targetable by pharmaceuticals or other conventional therapies, health care providers have begun to recognize that the treatment of chronic illness such as pain, depression, fatigue, and sleep requires attention to imbalances in mind, body, and spirit. Such attention is also essential for healthy individuals to realize and maintain daily tranquility, happiness, and vitality. Taiji/qigong (TQ) is a multidimensional (mind/body/spirit integrative) and multimodal (strength, flexibility, balance, cognitive and aerobic training) form of exercise that combines the benefits of meditation, posture control, deep breathing, and movement exercise. Very importantly, there are several different, essential components of traditional TQ training that must be included to efficiently realize the benefits of practice. In this interactive lecture, Dr. Yang will share with you several spiritual and mental principles of meditative practice and physical exercises to nurture daily tranquility, happiness, and vitality. These are simple but effective exercises for you and your patients.
