Mood imbalances, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia occur more often in women, and are conventionally treated with medications, especially antidepressants. However, from a biochemical standpoint, these conditions are most often related to imbalances in hormones, neurotransmitters, and their micronutrient co-factors. Properly diagnosed with a good history and appropriate laboratory testing, they can be corrected with the appropriate use of supplements (herbs, vitamins, minerals, amino acids) and bio-identical hormones.
Learning Objectives
- Disorders in mood and cognition reflect an imbalance in internal biochemistry, especially in neurotransmitter and hormone function
- Imbalances in both neurotransmitters and hormones can be diagnosed by appropriate laboratory testing
- These imbalances can be successfully corrected with dietary changes, targeted nutritional supplementation (vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids), and bio-identical hormones
