The duration of treatment for a typical orthodontic case is about two years. Given the desire for shorter treatment time, various procedures are now available to orthodontists to decrease treatment time. This presentation will first describe the biology of tooth movement and then review the many approaches that are available to orthodontists to accelerate tooth movement. These approaches vary from surgical procedures, such as periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO), to using devices for micro-osteoperforations to pharamacological agents.
