As smoking prevalence has declined among U.S. adults, an increase incidence in oropharyngeal cancers in younger patients who NEVER smoked has been identified and the proportion of these tumors that carried the human papillomavirus (HPV) rose. This course will evaluate the decline in other head and neck cancers and review the molecular evidence and cancer biology linking HPV to oropharyngeal cancers. The course will highlight current trends/studies identifying those at risk and provide guidance and education to the dental professional to expand awareness and early detection to their patients.
