Ted Malahias, DDS
Celiac disease is the most common and most underdiagnosed hereditary autoimmune condition in the United States. One percent of the population (over 3 million people) is affected. Dentists who are knowledgeable about this condition may benefit their patients by understanding their needs and in turn may recognize signs of celiac disease in undiagnosed patients. This presentation will cover: the history leading up to the discovery of the cause of celiac disease; a description of the pathology seen in celiac disease and the mechanism involved in causing this pathology; and, the prevalence of celiac disease and a description of its various clinical presentations. There will be a review of the oral presentation of celiac disease, including its effect on dental enamel and soft tissue, as well as the testing needed in the diagnosis of celiac disease and associated medical conditions found in these patients. You will discover which dental products are safe for celiac patients and be introduced to the labeling of gluten free foods. Video clips with actual cases will be presented.
