No matter the size, location, or staff expertise of a practice, fraud and embezzlement can occur. Every office needs to establish checks and balances to guard against surprisingly common types of employee theft and illegal billing practices. While U.S. businesses lose an average of 6 percent of their revenue to fraud and cash mishandling, smaller organizations, including dental practices, tend to lose more because they lack sufficient checks and balances. This risk also passes on to the patient, whose identity and protected information are accessible to potential thieves working right in the dental office.
