Dental degree, Fairleigh S. Dickinson College of Dental Medicine; adjunct clinical professor, Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine; private practice, Boynton Beach, FL.
Description:
As patients' medical histories and treatments become increasingly complicated, the general dentist is faced with complex descisions regarding patients' dental and surgical care. The management of patients who are on medications such as bisphosphonates and anticoagulants will be reviewed. Also, local anesthetics, anesthetic techniques, contraindications and proper referrals will be emphasized. Lastly, a review of proper preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative surgical care will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on applying standard surgical techniques despite the increasing prevalence of more "modern" surgical tools.
Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Identify patients' medical/dental issues which may affect care
Recognize accepted surgical techniques for common procedures
Understand the role of medications currently in use that will influence care
Determine a proper surgical treatment plan and implement the plan
Identify and manage pre/post-operative issues in the oral surgical patient
