Recreational marinas and boatyards can be dangerous places. Many stakeholders are not familiar with the applicable NFPA standards. Watercraft construction materials and fuels provide substantial fire loads and floating fueling stations present extraordinary fire hazards. Electrical systems are prone to water damage, yet ground fault protection is extremely rare and local jurisdictions have little control over recreational watercraft. Narrow docks, long hose lays, restricted sector access, and installation/maintenance shortfalls can challenge even experienced firefighters. This session will explore special risks and NFPA requirements related to marina electrical installations, fueling stations, firefighting, and the management and maintenance of these systems.
