Recent regulations requiring RIP (reduced-ignition propensity) or FSC (fire-standard-compliant) cigarettes have contributed to an estimated 30% reduction in deaths due to cigarette-related fires. However, cigarettes still remain the leading ignition source in fatal fires. This session will address research on the experienced improvement in cigarette fire losses and improvements in RIP/FSC cigarette test methods, as well as the development of the measurement science for very-low-ignition propensity (VLIP) cigarettes in response to interest in further reducing these fires.
