There have been numerous large losses at hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs) resulting in employee injuries, death, significant property damage and community evacuations. After three such events, the Chemical Safety Board has recommended the NFPA develop codes and standards for fire prevention and fire protection for TSDFs. The FPRF initiated a project to research the TSDF fire problem and perform a gap analysis. This presentation will review recent TSDF losses, the existing regulatory framework for TSDFs and applicable NFPA fire codes to address the fire problem and close the gap to reduce the occurrence and/or severity of losses at TSDF.
