Delivering adequate fire fighting water supplies to the upper stories of high-rise buildings can be challenging. This presentation will outline the general basis of design for multi-zone standpipe systems in very tall buildings, as defined in NFPA 20. While the prescriptive codes/standards offer a viable starting point for standpipe system design, regional and site-specific practices and requirements often trigger a need for a more performance-based approach. Topics covered will include vertical staging of fire pumps, proper zoning of standpipe systems, pressure regulation and management, auxiliary water storage on upper floors of high-rise buildings, protection of standpipes and other proposed changes to NFPA 14.
