NFPA 921 has changed the field of fire investigation through emphasis on the scientific method and substantiation of guidance with scientific work. This presentation provides an overview of recent work that has advanced forensic science and improved our understanding of fire effects, pattern formation, and the use of forensic tools. A range of topics will be discussed, including clean burn, calcination, flashover, arc vs melt damage, and low voltage fire sources. The impact of scientific advancements on these topics will be discussed as they relate to analyzing origin and cause hypotheses.
