Current in-rack automatic sprinkler (IRAS) protection guidance is complex and cumbersome; the wide variety of storage configurations makes it nearly impossible to test every configuration to provide validated guidance. Research is underway using a coupled experimental and modeling strategy to understand fundamental IRAS phenomena and optimize large-scale IRAS fire testing. Intermediate-scale cold-flow water distribution and fire suppression tests have been coupled with a newly developed computational fluid dynamics model (FireFOAM). Combined experimental and modeled results will be used to provide new IRAS protection guidance.
