In New York City, developers and architects have long built some of the tallest and most iconic high-rise buildings in the world. A recent, architecturally innovative trend takes a new approach. By obtaining air rights above adjacent, smaller buildings, new buildings are being designed to maximize their floor area through the use of cantilevered construction. Such construction poses challenges not anticipated by the New York City building code with respect to exterior fire exposure. This session looks at a prescriptive and performance-based design rationale, the development of fire exposure performance criteria and pass/fail thresholds, possible design fire scenarios, and the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to evaluate the potential severe case exposure.
